Two Mayville High School students, Henry Y. Shirasaki-Krahn and Daisy Schreiber, have been named as semifinalists for the 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program.
Henry Shirasaki-Krahn is currently a senior at Mayville High School who plans on attending an undergraduate program at a College or University when he graduates. While being a student at Mayville, he has been a member of band, yearbook and has created his own band, “The Danios.”
When asked how it feels to be a semifinalist, Shirasaki-Krahn responded, “I feel honored to be able to represent my school nationally, and I’m very grateful to the people who gave me the opportunity to become a National Merit semifinalist.”
Daisy Schreiber is also a senior at Mayville High School. After college, she plans on attending a four-year college, most likely majoring in English, and considering attending law school after that. While at Mayville High School, Schreiber has been a member of Art Club, a soprano in the school’s a-capella group, Incognito, and is president and student council representative for the school’s Diversity Club, which she claims to be very passionate about.
When also asked about her feelings on being a semifinalist, Schreiber responded, “It’s exciting but also pretty nerve-wrecking. On one hand, I’m super proud that my test score was high enough to get this far, but it brings a lot of pressure to keep going and keep achieving. I’m excited to see what the future brings, even if it feels scary!”
The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition across the United States that recognizes the highest-achieving high school students and awards them with college scholarships. Students are automatically entered into the program when they take the PSAT/NMSQT (National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) during their junior year. The program screens well over a million entries per year, and those who make the semifinalist are only one (or in this case, two) of about 16,000 of those test takers.
Having two students from Mayville as semifinalists is a grand accomplishment for both the school and the students.
Congratulations to both of these students!
