Posted

On October 30, Two-Seed Lomira football defeated three-seed Cambridge 28-6 at home in the Division Six Level 2 Playoff Game.

Lomira’s (11-0) defense got the first big play of the game when senior defensive back Alex Zahn high-pointed a Cambridge (8-3) pass and intercepted it for the Lions at their own 22-yard line.

The Lions offense drove 78 yards in 12 plays, taking seven minutes off the game clock before sophomore running back Hunter Schaumberg ran 12 yards into the end zone for a 7-0 Lomira lead at the 2:05 mark in the first quarter.

Junior linebacker Jackson Breitlow cut in front of an Ian Nelles pass, giving the ball right back to the Lions at their own 46-yard line.

Lomira got one first down before punting the ball back to the Cambridge offense at the eight-yard line.

The Lions' pass rush showed their strength when junior defensive lineman Cash Agamaite and Mason Schelvan, along with sophomore Grayson Bloohm, met at the quarterback for a six-yard loss, halting the Blue Jays' next offensive drive.

Lomira’s offense was stopped on fourth down at the Cambridge 37-yard line.

Cambridge proceeded to have their best offensive drive of the game when Nelles connected with Evan Harbort for a 27-yard touchdown, but junior linebacker Cole Geiger intercepted the 2-point pass for the Lions, making the score 7-6 with 23 seconds left in the half.

Schaumberg (212 Rushing Yards) scored his second touchdown of the game on a five-yard rush to finish off Lomira’s first offensive drive of the second half, giving the Lions a 14-6 lead with 7:03 in the third quarter.

The Lions' defense had a couple of positive plays, with a one-yard tackle for a loss by senior linebacker Blake Steger and Breitlow breaking up a pass before the Blue Jays got to the Lomira ten-yard line.

Lomira stopped Cambridge on fourth down when Schaumberg intercepted a Nelles pass in the end zone, ending the Blue Jays' scoring threat in the third quarter.

Schaumberg started the Lions' offensive drive with a 20-yard run and finished off the drive when he burst through the Blue Jays' defense, sprinting into the end zone for a 35-yard touchdown, pushing the Lomira lead to 21-6 with 10:18 left in the game.

Cambridge’s offense drove to the Lions’ 13-yard line before the Lions defense bowed up to stop the Blue Jays on fourth down when the Lomira pass rush tipped the ball at the line of scrimmage.

Senior quarterback Keegan Kell (86 rushing yards) got into the open field for a 34-yard dash, and Schaumberg added a 21-yard run to set up the Lions inside the ten-yard line.

Schaumberg scored his fourth touchdown of the game and his 33rd touchdown of the season on a nine-yard rush, giving Lomira a 28-6 home playoff victory.

Lomira (11-0) advances to the Sectional Final and will play at one-seed Edgar (10-1) on November 6 at 7 p.m.
