On October 8, Husticon football lost 21-20 at home to Waterloo on Senior and Parents Night in their Eastern Suburban Conference matchup.
Waterloo (2-6, 1-5) scored on a backwards pass from Levi Lauersdorf to Gavin Schroud for a 27-yard touchdown with 4:32 in the first quarter, taking a 6-0 lead over Husticon (1-7, 1-5).
Quarterback Anthony Kluck found Cooper Billington for a 27-yard pass, and Kluck followed up with a 17-yard rush to get the Marshfalcons offense going on the ensuing drive.
Kluck converted a fourth down at the Waterloo 23 with a 15-yard rush, getting the ball inside Waterloo's 10-yard line.
Running back Eleazar Selgard capped off the drive with a one-yard rushing touchdown to tie the game at six with 9:25 on the second-quarter clock.
Husticon drove to the Waterloo 22-yard line before the Marshfalcons were stopped on fourth down.
Waterloo scored on a 41-yard pass from Lauersdorf to Logan Powers, and Schroud converted a run for a two-point conversion with 31 seconds left in the half, giving Waterloo a 14-6 lead.
Billington returned the second-half opening kick to the Waterloo 43-yard line, but the Marshfalcons were stopped on fourth down at the 35-yard line.
Freshman quarterback Collin Kelly came off the bench to throw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Adrian Schuelke with 1:36 in the third quarter, putting the score at 14-12 in favor of Waterloo.
Schroud scored on a 33-yard rushing touchdown at the 10:28 mark in the fourth quarter for Waterloo, increasing their lead to 21-12.
Kluck connected with Billington on a 25-yard pass to kick-start the Husticon drive, which was capped off by a Selgrad two-yard rushing touchdown and a two-point conversion with 5:40 left in the game, making the score 21-20.
Husticon was facing a fourth down at the Waterloo 25-yard line with 1:17 remaining on the clock when Kluck found Kaleb Hodgson for 12 yards to continue their drive at the Waterloo 13-yard line.
Selgrad ran for 10 yards to get Husticon to the three-yard line, setting up a first-and-goal for the Marshfalcons.
Husticon called their final timeout with nine seconds left, with the ball resting at the Pirates' one-yard line.
Selgrad got the final carry of the game when he attempted to get across the goal line but was stopped inches from the game-winning touchdown, resulting in Waterloo escaping with a dramatic 21- 20 win over Husticon.
