Cardinals Dominate Laconia, 42-6, on Homecoming Night

MAYVILLE — Mayville gave its homecoming crowd plenty to celebrate Friday night, overpowering Laconia 42-6 at Ray Dunn Field behind a dominant rushing attack and strong defensive performance.

Joe Promersberger led the Cardinals with 297 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 31 carries, including a 56-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter. Mayville piled up 404 rushing yards and 426 yards of total offense while improving to 6-2 on the season.

The Cardinals established control early, taking a 14-0 first-quarter lead on touchdown runs by Promersberger and Tanner Schneider. Promersberger added two more scores over the next two quarters, extending Mayville's advantage to 28-0 heading into the fourth.

Mayville's defense kept Laconia's offense in check, holding the Spartans to just 32 rushing yards and 184 yards of total offense. Schneider and Promersberger each recorded an interception, with Schneider returning his 29 yards.

Laconia broke through early in the fourth quarter when quarterback Asher Morgan connected with Tillman Madigan for a 31-yard touchdown. Mayville answered with Promersberger's 56-yard run, followed by an 11-yard touchdown from Kevin Keller to seal the win.

The Cardinals finished with 23 first downs compared to Laconia's nine, controlling the line of scrimmage throughout the night.

Homecoming festivities added to the excitement, with the Mayville pep band and color guard performing during a busy halftime celebration.

Representatives from T-Mobile presented the school district with a $5,000 check as part of its Friday Night 5G Lights giveaway.

The crowd also joined in singing "Happy Birthday" to longtime assistant coach and local historian Bill Lee, celebrating his 90th birthday.

The victory capped a memorable homecoming night for the Cardinals and the Mayville community.
