James “Derby” Michael Rinas, 74, passed away unexpectedly with his loved ones by his side on Monday, January 31, 2022, at Froedtert Hospital in Wauwatosa. He was born on March 23, 1947, in Milwaukee, the son of Erwin P. and Elsie M. (nee Kraker) Rinas. He served in the U.S. Marines from 1966 to 1968. On June 12, 1984, Derby married Janis Jean Karoses in West Bend.

He owned various restaurants, including Brown Derby on Big Cedar Lake, Brown Jug in West Bend, Barrel Haus in Kewaskum and C.C. Cody’s in Campbellsport, before retiring.

As a proud Marine Veteran, Derby enjoyed spending time collecting military memorabilia and adding to his watch and bracelet collections. When he wasn’t being an avid collector, he liked mowing his lawn and finding new paint projects. He would relax by looking at Harleys, reminiscing about the days he rode with his friends, watching his Raiders and Brewers while cuddling with his fur-babies, Symba, Nala, Kona Bear and Ting. He also loved tinkering in his garage, feeding his birds and barn kitties, attending concerts, ballgames, The State Fair and dining at his favorite Italian and Greek restaurants. Most of all, Derby loved spending time with his family. Derby was one of a kind and will be greatly missed by everyone.

Derby is survived by his beloved wife, Janis; children, Chad Rinas, Casey (Tommy) Weber and Cody Rinas; sisters, Linda (George) Goetz and Jeanne Sawatzki; sisters-in-law, Judy Volesky, Susan Karoses and Jane Weinfurter; brothers-in-law, Jeff Karoses, Jay Karoses, Terry Mielke and Jim Volesky; nieces, nephews, many relatives and friends.

Preceding Derby in death were his parents; in-laws, Joseph and Bernice Karoses; his Special Aunty Agnes; brothers-in-law, Joe Pat Karoses and Jack Karoses.

Visitation for Derby will be Sunday, February 13, beginning with Military Honors at 1 p.m. continuing until 6 p.m. and conclude with a service at the Twohig Funeral Home, 109 W. Main St. Campbellsport.
