MITCHELL BRADLEY KELLER SPORTS EDITOR This week’s Game of the Week was not technically a game at all – the cross-country meet named for Mike Hurlbert and held at Mayville Golf Course is an “invitational” – but plenty of gamesmanship takes place throughout the course of a 5,000-meter race, and area runners from Horicon, Lomira and Mayville logged spectacular times at the Friday, Sept. 10, annual invite.Known for its famously steep hill at the start of the race, the Mike Hurlbert Invitational is one coaches and runners, alike, circle at the beginning of each season. That is because the delicately maintained fairways, generally flat surfaces and gradual, rolling hills of golf courses make for excellent 5,000-meter tracks. Often, the best times for any individual runner in any particular season will be at a venue tailor-made for the Scottish game.
