John M. “Bear” Eckerstorfer, 64, went home to the Lord on Monday, May 6, 2019, after a brief battle with cancer.

John was born on April 11, 1955 the son of Francis “Frank” and Margarete “Peggy” (Feia) Eckerstorfer in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

John received a BS in political science with a minor in geography and a technical degree in food science. He had been employed at Kroger Grocer’s as a meat inspector and prior to that as a health inspector in Oneida County. He also operated Yesterday’s Bar in Mayville for a few years.

Bear enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, reading and gardening.

He had a wonderful sense of humor, with the uncanny ability to tell you a joke on any topic.

John was a loving and devoted father, always wanting to put others before himself. His fondest memories were time spent with his sons fishing in Eagle River and hunting on the farm.

John is survived by his sons, Ian (Jennifer) Eckerstorfer of Norfolk, VA, Evan Eckerstorfer of Glendale, and Austin Eckerstorfer of Franklin; his mother, Margarete “Peggy” Eckerstorfer of Beaver Dam; his brothers and sister, Rick Eckerstorfer and his sons Colin and Ashton of Waupun, Bill (Marina) Eckerstorfer and their son, Matthew, and daughter, Ashley of Arbor Vitae, Mike (Patricia) Eckerstorfer of Menomonee, Lori (Alan) Weisman and their son William and daughter, Emily, Bob (Tess) Eckerstorfer and their daughters Jessica, Maggie, and Sarah of Sioux Falls; his aunt and godmother, Mary Feia and aunt Roslyn Feia. He is further survived by other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Francis “Frank” in 2017; grandparents, Francis and Kathryn Eckerstorfer and Christine Feia; and his brother, James Eckerstorfer.

Memorial gathering will be held on Thursday, June 6, from 10 a.m. until noon at St. Katherine Drexel Mission Hall. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at noon with the Rev. Michael Erwin officiating.
