The Mayville Common Council met on April 13, covering topics ranging from a library radon detector lending program to student-led park improvements and April 7 election results.
Mayor Rob Boelk highlighted an initiative at the Mayville Public Library, which is using a portion of its budget to offer radon detectors for free checkout to residents. The library has five detectors available for loan to cardholders, who may keep a unit for up to one week to test their private residences. A Mayville Library card is required to participate. Radon test kits are also available for purchase at hardware stores and through municipal or county health departments.
City Clerk Anastasia Gonstead presented a review of the April 7 election results. Of 3,084 registered voters, 1,126 cast ballots, representing a 36.5 percent turnout. There were 40 same-day voter registrations. The council confirmed the election results by resolution during the meeting.
The council also voted to approve a service-learning project proposed by seventh-grade students from Mayville Jr./Sr. High School. Under the direction of teacher Dave Seiler, the students conducted surveys and proposed improvements to Lion’s Point Park, including upgraded basketball and volleyball courts, a concrete ping-pong table, and bag boards.
Other items addressed during the meeting included the leasing of city-owned forestry property for bow hunting rights and a resolution ratifying and approving a Mayville Library Board policy allowing payment to full-time and part-time library staff during certain emergency closures.
The full meeting is available to view on the city’s YouTube page.
