Jane Royer Carter of Mayville passed away peacefully on October 6, 2025, at age 93. Born in Elmhurst, IL, to Kenneth and Irma Royer, she moved with her family to Mayville at age four, where they established Purity Cheese Company and its well-known May-Bud brand. Her parents and siblings, Ken and Carolyn, instilled in her a lifelong appreciation for nature, learning, and caring for others.
Jane graduated from Mayville High School in 1950 and earned degrees in Speech and Hearing Pathology and French from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1954. That same year, she married the love of her life, Daniel J. Carter.
She devoted more than 25 years to her career as a Speech and Hearing Pathologist, beginning in the Washington, D.C. area and later in Princeton, NJ, before returning to Mayville in 1966. There she continued her work in the Mayville Public Schools, the Tri-County Cooperative Education Service Agency, and eventually in her home practice.
In 1975, Jane and Dan co-founded Dan Carter, Inc., a national food marketing and dairy consulting firm, where she served as Vice President of Operations for 23 years. Together they also helped establish the Dairy Business Innovation Center to strengthen Wisconsin’s dairy industry.
Jane’s life was marked by community service, faith, and leadership. She served on the Mayville Area Chamber of Commerce, which named her Citizen of the Year in 1995, and on the Friends of Horicon Marsh, where she was honored as Volunteer of the Year in 2000. A lifelong member of the Mayville United Methodist Church, she served in many roles including Church School Superintendent, Bible study leader, choir member, and Lay Leader.
Jane loved reading and writing, gardening, traveling, playing bridge, and hosting family and friends - often with her famous cheese soufflé at the center of the table.
She is survived by her son, Brad (Loretta) Carter; daughter, Susan (Stephen) Muller; grandchildren, Elizabeth (Steven) Coniglio and Thomas (Suzanne) Muller; great-granddaughter, Taylor Carter Coniglio; sister, Carolyn Jacobus; sister-in-law, Amber Carter; and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dan; parents, Kenneth and Irma Royer; and brother, Ken Royer.
A service will be held Saturday, Nov. 8, at 11 a.m. at Mayville United Methodist Church, followed by a Celebration of Life at the Mayville Golf Club from 12:30 to 4:00 p.m. All who knew Jane are warmly invited to attend.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Friends of Horicon Marsh at horiconmarsh.org or mailed to Friends of Horicon Marsh ℅ Carter Memorial, N7725 State Highway 28, Horicon, WI 53032. Further details are on the Koepsell Funeral Home website at www.koepsellfh.com.
