Horicon Marshmen Foundation Golf Open Raised $51,000 to Support Horicon School District

Posted

Over $51,000 were raised by the Horicon Marshmen Foundation during their Golf Open Tournament on Saturday, Aug. 15 at the Horicon Hills Golf Club. The money was raised in an effort to help support the Horicon School District.

With 32 teams competing, the event was a huge success and helped connect the community and the school district. “Everybody that played in our golf tournament really had a connection towards our school district in some way. Whether they’re an alumni or community member or family. It really was a fun day of raising money and supporting our school district,” said Rich Appel who led the tournament. Appel, now retired, was a former superintendent for the Horicon School District.

Funding for the district is not always the most stable thing; it is ever changing and the Marshmen Foundation is trying to create some stability.

Appel explained, “As things have changed over time and funding is not kept up with state funding… It’s really important. And part of why we even started the foundation was to help offset and support for the school district and so many different things.”

The reduction of state funding is hitting Horicon, and other schools, hard according to Appel.

Over the next few years, the Marshmen Foundation will help support the district with the money they raised here and in future years.

Appel said, “Within our by laws and so the foundation can continue to endure, all that money will go towards the school district. Just a portion of it will go each year. So when we raise $51,000 we don’t send $51,000 back in. We are trying to build up our budget enough to be able to support longevity of the school district.” The budget is still being developed but it will be a substantial part of the money they raised.

Even though it was a tournament, it wasn’t highly competitive. Rather, they embraced having fun, coming together as a community and supporting the school. “Our tournament is really, like most fundraising tournaments, is all about the fun and the support,” Appel mentioned. They had around 50 raffle prizes that varied from $300 in value to $60.

This is the fifth year the Marshmen Foundation has held a golf tournament to raise money. In the past, it used to be a basketball booster tournament.

The Marshmen Foundation would like to thank Horicon Hills Golf Club for their help and support with hosting this tournament.

Next year, and the years following, the event will be held on the second Saturday in August.

Also in the future, the Marshmen Foundation is going to try legacy giving where people can include donating money in their estate to support the school.

Appel said, “It’s all about our students and our staff to make sure that we can continue to provide quality programs and support our kids.”
