Hoff’s was established in 1961 by Wayne and Dorothy Hoff as Hoff’s United Food Inc/Hoff’s Red Owl.
In the beginning, the business was mostly custom slaughtering for area farmers, but eventually a five-aisle grocery was started and became the Hoff’s Red Owl in 1984.
Tim and Mel Hoff took over as owners of the business in 1997, and the Hoff’s acquired Kar Len’s Catering in 2012, venturing into the catering world.
“As the small area farms started to dwindle, we made the decision to quit slaughtering in 2015 and pursue the catering side of the business more aggressively,” said Owner Mel Hoff.
The store has been remodeled many times, with the most recent renovation happening in 2018, and Hoff’s is currently a meat retail store offering their brand of products.
“We sell fresh meat and sausage, smoked meat and sausages and have a full line of meat entrees (such as pulled pork and shredded beef) along with sides (such as mac and cheese and mashed potatoes).” said Hoff. “We offer our own salads with local produce as well and we have a to-go lunch on weekdays and serve a to-go fish fry every Friday.”
“We also offer many catering options, including full service,” said Hoff. We sell local cheeses and use buns from a local bakery.”
“The future of the food industry in this area is somewhat uncertain due to inflation and rising labor costs,” said Hoff.
“Having local food options is convenient for people in the area and great for the local economy,” said Hoff.
Hoff is a family business with Sawyer Hoff as a full-time employee and part-time employees consisting of Becca Hoff, Lily Christian, Shauna Hoff, Devon Hoff and Liberty Christian.
“Our business has always been the heart of the family,” said Hoff. “We take pride in using the recipes passed down to us as well as collaborating on new products.”
